भारत में अलग-अलग धर्म जाति के लोग अलग-अलग तरह की चीजें सर पर पहनते हैं। यह चीजें उनके धर्म व संस्कृति को प्रदर्शित करती हैं। टोपी, पगड़ी, साफा इसके मुख्य उदाहरण है।

In India, people of different religions wear different types of things on their heads. These things reflect their religion and culture. Topi, turban, safa are the main examples.

टोपी सिर का एक ऐसा पहनावा है, जो कि अधिकतर भारतीय हमेशा पहने रखते हैं। जिस गांधी टोपी को गांधी टोपी कहा जाता है, गांधीजी ने उसे कभी नहीं पहना होगा। दरअसल, यह महाराष्ट्र के गांवों में पहनी जाने वाली टोपी है। इसी तरह हिमाचली टोपी, नेपाली टोपी, तमिल टोपी, मणिपुरी टोपी, पठानी टोपी, हैदराबादी टोपी आदि अनेक प्रकार की टोपियां होती हैं। 

Topi is one such headgear that most Indians always wear. Gandhiji would never have worn the Gandhi cap which is called Gandhi Topi. Actually, this is the cap worn in the villages of Maharashtra. Similarly there are many types of caps like Himachali topi, Nepali topi, Tamil topi, Manipuri topi, Pathani topi, Hyderabadi topi etc.

 सिर के पहनावे को कपालिका, शिरस्त्राण, शिरावस्त्र या शिरोवेष कहते हैं। यह कपालिका कई प्रकार की होती है। प्रत्येक प्रांत में यह अलग-अलग किस्म, नाम, रंग और रूप में होती है। राजा-महाराजाओं के तो एक से एक स्टाइल के टोप, पगड़ी या मुकुट हुआ करते थे लेकिन हम सामान्यजनों द्वारा पहने जाने वाले कपालिका के बारे में ही बात करेंगे। यहां ध्यान रखने वाली बात यह है कि टोपी और पगड़ी में फर्क होता है।

The wearing of the head is called Kapalika, Shirastran, Shiravashtra or Shirovesh. There are many types of this skull. In each province it is different in variety, name, color and form. The kings and emperors used to have one style of headgear, turban or crown, but we will talk only about the Kapalika worn by the common people. The point to be kept in mind here is that there is a difference between a cap and a turban.
